in the Greater Rochester Area

Why is there such a big difference in the price of funerals? Most of the difference can be attributed to two main factors:

1) The specific arrangements selected.
2) The funeral home employed to provide those arrangements.

What do you get?

All Plans include the following Basic Goods, Services and Use of Facilities (BGSF):
• Removing the body from the place of death
• Using the preparation room for embalming and/or casketing
• Filing the death certificate
• Obtaining the burial/transit permit
• Transporting the body to the cemetery or crematory
• Placing a notice in the newspaper (but not the actual cost of the notice)
• Counseling the family regarding death benefits

Six major types of arrangements with a description of each are listed below.
You will see a huge range of prices among funeral homes for the same type of funeral. You are invited to use these prices as a "yardstick" to comparison-shop.



Direct Cremation: $900 - $3,300

Included:
• BGSF using an alternate container.
• Crematory fee
• Returning the cremated remains to family, if requested.

Not included:
• Embalming
• Using the funeral home for visitation or service

Direct Burial: $1,000 - $4,300

Included:
• BGSF using an alternate container.
• Providing a cave-proof outer interment receptacle

Not included:
• Embalming
• Using the funeral home for visitation or service.

Cremation after visitation & funeral service
$2,500 - $6,000

Included:
• BGSF using alternative container, plus embalming
• Using the funeral home for visitation (4 hours) and a service
• Crematory fee

Not included:
• Using a casket instead of an alternate container
  (Casket prices vary from about $1,000 to over $40,000)
• Clothing, hairdressing

Burial after visitation and funeral service
$2,500 - $6,000

Included:
• BGSF using alternative container, plus embalming
• Using the funeral home for visitation (4 hours) and a service
• Cave-proof outer interment receptacle

Not included:
• Using a casket instead of an alternate container
  (Casket prices vary from about $1,000 to over $40,000)
• Clothing, hairdressing, hearse, limousine, motorcycle escort

Body Donation to the UR Medical Center

If death occurs in a hospital or nursing home within Monroe County. No charge.

Included:
• Transportation of the body to the Medical Center by a funeral director on their staff
• Death certificate and other necessary paperwork
• Cremation of remains, and burial or return of ashes, per request of family

Body Donation to UR Cont'd

If death occurs in a private home or outside of Monroe County: $600 - $2,300

Included:
• Private funeral home's BGSF
• Transfer of remains to Medical Center
• Cremation of remains, and burial or return of ashes, per request of family

Not included:
Additional charges for mileage beyond a certain radius specified by funeral home

Note: The donor must be registered with the URMC's Anatomical Gift Program, and some potential donors may not meet the eligibility requirements. To register or learn more about disqualifying circumstances, call the AGP at (585) 275-2592.

Additional Costs

When planning funeral arrangements, keep in mind that, in addition to the figures shown above, there will be cemetery costs and miscellaneous charges that may significantly alter the total expense.

A wide range of prices is given for cemetery lots: the higher prices are generally for city or suburban cemeteries; the lower prices are for rural cemeteries.

Approximate costs for some of these additional items are:

1) Cemetery plot (single) - $700 to $3,000
2) Cemetery plot (double) - $1,400 to $6,000
3) Green Burial Plot (single) - $2,000 to $3,000
4) Interment of casket* - $550 to $1,200
5) Marker or headstone - $500 and up
6) Crypt in mausoleum (single) - $2,750 to $12,100
7) Columbarium niche (single) - $1,100 to $5,900
8) Cemetery plot for cremated remains - $500 to $3,000
9) Interment of cremated remains - $400 to $1,000
10) Urn - $50 and up
11) Certified copies of death certificate - $30 each
12) Honorarium for clergy - $150 and up
13) Newspaper death notice - Depends on newspaper

* Required for earth burial
